“Good on ya, mate!” That’s how we Kangaroos encourage and show appreciation to our kangaroo-mates. Those early Aussie convict blokes copied this expression off us, and never thanked us at all. Instead, we get Rolf Harris singing “Tie Me Kangaroo Down”, the classic song about us Kangaroos. Fair to say, we never got any royalty out of that as well. Never mind, let us set the record straight here for the kangaroos – straight from the Kangaroos’ mouth or pouch. Us Kangaroos belong to the family of macropods, meaning “big feet”. Sorry, that is not “Big Foot – the Yeti – Abominable Snowman”. Our macropod family ranges from the pint-sized Potoroo (which weighs one kg.), right up to the Red Kangaroo which weighs 85 kg (187 lbs) and stands 2 m (6 ft) tall. Of course, if we carry a “Joey” (baby kangaroo) in our pouch, we weigh even more. But we will still out-jump any human Olympic long jumper(Carl Lewis, Mike Powell, Bob Beamon etc). We can simply “hop” more than 27 feet, mate. Also, we male kangaroos fight and ‘box” to prove ourselves to the gals. Mike Tyson better not be around when we are in the dating mood.
