Here are a few examples of how the rich folks lived around Sydney, as a comparison to say common people such as those who lived at Sussanah Place. Vaucluse House (1827) (picture, left) set in ten of its original 206 hectares, survives as the only 19th century harbourside estate with house, stables, laundry and pleasure gardens.

Elizabeth Bay House (1839)(picture, right) is a superb example of colonial architecture in a magnificent setting overlooking Sydney Harbour.
Elizabeth Farm (1793), (picture, below) with its deep shady verandahs, is the epitome of the Australian colonial homestead and was built for John and Elizabeth Macarthur – pioneers of the Australian wool industry.
